Makerspace Policy
To assist in fostering business development, experimentation, and personal growth in the community, the Somerset County Library provides access to a variety of maker equipment, including 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and other technology, for public use.
Usage
The priority for use of Makerspace equipment will be given to library programs or activities.
In most cases, public usage of Makerspace technology will be mediated by library staff, but the Library reserves the right to allow technically sophisticated users direct access to equipment, at the discretion of Library staff.
Staff-mediated use and supervision of Makerspace technology by Library staff do not constitute knowledge, or acknowledgement, of any unapparent final use of the 3D product, and the Library specifically disclaims any knowledge thereof. The Library is not responsible for any object created by the 3D printer.
The Library is not liable for malfunctions, defects or misprints. Bad prints that are the fault of the machine, a power outage, etc., will be reprinted at no charge. Users will be charged for bad prints that result from a fault in the model design or supports.
Patrons will be required to provide contact information when submitting requests. Items not picked up within seven days of notification of completion become Library property.
Right of Refusal
The Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request. Restricted items include anything that is:
- Prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
- Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
- Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the Library environment.
- In violation of intellectual property rights.
Staff may also refuse requests for the use of equipment that are reasonably anticipated to be outside the capabilities of the device.
Fees
The Library will set a fee schedule for the use of equipment that ensures that the Library is fully compensated for any materials consumed as well as an hourly fee to cover operational costs.
